Making a Pinata
Piņatas can create a lot of fun at a birthday party and are relatively simple to make. Briefly they are made using:
- A LARGE round balloon
- A good pile of old newspapers
- Powdered wallpaper paster
- Tape (regular or masking)
- Thin cardboard
- Tissue paper or construction paper
- String or yarn
- A craft knife
- Goodies to fill the Piņata
Method:
- Blow up the balloon and tie a knot at the end.
- Tear newspapers into strips about 2 cm wide and about 15cm long.
- Mix up the powdered wallpaper paste and cold water to make a paste the consistency of medium thick glue.
- Dip the newspaper strips into the glue and spread them onto the balloon.
- Thoroughly cover the balloon, leaving a small hole at the top to remove the balloon and fill the piņata. Let the first layer dry.
- Repeat two more times, until the papier-mache is built up to a good thickness.
- Next day if the paper feels dry when you touch it, then wrap the balloon with the yarn to give it strength to hold when swinging it.
- Add another two layers of glue and newspapers. Let it dry for another day.
- Cut a 6cm flap in the top using a craft knife (this will burst the balloon) and fill with lollies or treats.
- Use cardboard to make the shape you want and paint. Finishing touches of streamers hanging down are fun.
- Tape the flap closed, string the piņata up to a tree or a clothesline and let the kids smash it open.
