Birthday Cake
To your child the birthday cake is a vital part of their birthday party.
It makes the centre of the party food and provides the fun of blowing out the candles and the 
impetus for singing Happy Birthday. Following are some ideas to help you when deciding on the cake for your child’s party.
When planning the birthday cake choose your favourite recipe to make the cake. Now is not the time to experiment. The decorations are the things which make an ordinary cake a birthday cake. They can be as simple or as complicated as you like. Following are some tips for decorating or making a birthday cake.
- A simple cake is decorated with lollies or hundreds and thousands and candles.
- Small toys or models of characters can be placed on the top of the cake for a theme party; a few animals on a green iced cake for a farm or zoo party, or horses for a horse themed party.
- Alternatively small pictures stuck on to toothpicks can also be used for decoration.
- The shape of the cake can suggest the theme e.g. a round cake with four small cupcakes make a dog’s paw; red for Clifford, blue for Blue’s Clues or brown for Scooby Doo.
- Butterflies can be made by cutting a square cake in half diagonally and joining the halves at the points to make the wings.
- Caterpillars are made with small cakes joined together in a wiggly line. By having at least one for each child there is no problem dividing the cake up.
Other cake shapes can be made using special tins. These can be hired from specialist cake shops or bought.
In hot weather ice cream cakes are popular and serve as desert as well as the cake. These can be purchased from local supermarkets or ice-cream shops.
If you want to make your own they can be decorated with edible cake toppers. Cake toppers can be purchased at some supermarkets, some cake or ice-cream shops or online.
