Australia Day
January 26th is the date that Australia celebrates the landing of Captain Arthur Phillip at Port Jackson in present-day Sydney, thereby claiming Australia for the British Empire. It wasn’t always the same. The different states celebrated their own significant dates. In 1946, the Commonwealth Government and all States and Territories finally agreed to observe the same national day - 26 January - and to call that day Australia Day. Usually Australia Day parties are held outside with a bar-b-que for food. They are more of a family day than a children’s party so we have included some sites to help with the planning
